Practice Management Solutions

The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) developed laws and penalties for not following their regulations and the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has annual work plans for who and what they are going to investigate. It has become of paramount importance that a practice follow the seven elements of a compliance program.

Although a compliance plan is initially an added burden for the practice, it has proven to actually save the practice money in lawsuits as well as increase revenue due to better coding. NCEB has found that many physicians undercode their E&Ms out of lack of comfort with the audits from the different carriers.

NCEB has on staff Certified Professional Coders (CPCs) to do coding audits/reviews (both proactive and reactive) and educational seminars to enable a practice to code without fear and actually get proper reimbursement for all the work they do. The auditors are able to go to the practices and observe the physicians and employees in order to get a better understanding of the work flow of each particular practice. They then review the charts for coding accuracy and have an educational conference with the physician and anyone else involved in coding. Our CPC's also are able to "shadow" the physician while he/she is seeing patients (with the appropriate permissions of the patient). Then after each visit, the coder and physician can compare notes on the documentation and assignment of codes for the visit. This has proven popular as well as effective by giving on site, timely information to the physician. NCEB also offers a regular schedule of auditing/reviewing in order to maintain compliance and train any future members of the practice. In reviewing the work flow of the practice, NCEB is often available to make suggestions that make the practice more efficient.

NCEB has on staff IT Professionals who are able to do a review of the practice's technology to ensure security as well as help to maintain security so that the practices infrastructure is HIPAA compliant.

In the HIPAA audits that NCEB does for clients, we make sure that the seven elements of an effective compliance plan are followed. Realizing that the government has stated that compliance is scalable to a practice's size, NCEB is able to help all sizes of practices to follow the regulations appropriately.
